For hundreds of years the Kisii people have carved the soapstone found in the rolling hills near Lake Victoria. Carvings ranged from such mundane items as pots for carrying fat to massage as skin protection from the sun and wind to figurines revered as holding the spirit of their ancestors. A carver sits with a simple piece of metal tied to a stick and, from a crude chunk of soapstone, creates a masterpiece. Each of these items includes an educational tag regarding Kisii carving.
